Professor Giovanni
Ceccarini graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University
of Pisa in 1996 and specialised at the same University in
Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases in 2002.
From 2003 to 2011 he was a researcher at Rockefeller University in New
York, in the molecular genetics laboratory directed by Prof. Jeffrey Friedman,
the well-known American researcher who discovered the hormone leptin in 1994.
From 2011 he was a researcher at the University of Pisa, first within the
“Rita Levi Montalcini” recruitment programme and then as a fixed-term researcher
(type B). Since March 2020 he has been Associate Professor of Endocrinology
(MED/13).
He carries out
research in the fields of thyroid pathophysiology, lipodystrophies and
obesity. He is a member of the Italian Society of Endocrinology (SIE), the
Italian Society of Obesity (SIO), the American Endocrine Society
(Endocrine Society) and the European Consortium for Lipodystrophies Research
(ECLIP), and is a member of the BOARD of the disease registry (ECLIP INTERNATIONAL
REGISTRY). In the European Reference Network on rare endocrine conditions (Endo-ERN) he is
coordinator for lipodystrophies.
He is also a member of the Executive Board of the Italian Society of
Endocrinology, of the Editorial Board of the journal JEI (Journal of
Endocrinological Investigation) and is an editor of the journal L’Endocrinologo. He has
received awards from the American Endocrine Society (Endocrine Society) and
won a competitive grant from Rockefeller University.
He has published papers in the following international scientific journals:
Cell Metabolism, Cell Reports, PNAS, Molecular Metabolism, JACS, PLOS
ONE, JCE&M, International Journal of Obesity, Obesity Surgery, European
Journal of Endocrinology, Metabolism, Thyroid.
He carries out
He teaches on the Degree Course in Dietetics, the Master's Degree Course in
Biosafety and Food Quality (BQA) and the Degree Course in
Exercise Science, and is also a lecturer at the Specialisation School in
Endocrinology and Metabolism.
He is affiliated
to the Endocrinology I Unit of Pisa University Hospital
as a contracted specialist endocrinologist.
