Clinical and research activity

Since her student days Dr. Teresa Rago has attended the ward and laboratory of the Institute of Endocrinology, Clinical Methodology and Occupational Medicine of the University of Pisa. She has undergone long specific training in the outpatient clinics for endocrine disorders, in particular thyroid diseases, and in performing ultrasound scans and fine-needle aspirations, gaining considerable clinical experience.

She has also carried out clinical and experimental research in the endocrine-metabolic field, with particular attention to autoimmune phenomena in thyroid diseases, endemic goitre and nodular disease, and iodine deficiency disorders. She took an active part in epidemiological surveys conducted by the Institute in Tuscany and Basilicata.

Dr. Rago's research in this field has focused above all on the study of patients with endemic goitre, Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. Regarding endemic goitre, some particular epidemiological aspects were considered.

In her clinical research she used conventional thyroid ultrasound and colour Doppler ultrasound as diagnostic support in autoimmune thyroid diseases and nodular disease.

She has also gained wide experience in the technique and use of fine-needle aspiration in nodular thyroid disease.
